Bio
In the early 70’s, Les took leave from the despatch department of a major ad agency to become a rock star.
Les joined HUSH as lead guitarist from 1972-1977. HUSH became one of the staple acts of ABC’s Countdown and pioneered glam rock in Australia. With No 1 hits like “Bony Maronie” and “Glad All Over”, HUSH earned 12 gold albums and toured the country selling out wherever they played.
After the band broke up in 1977, Les set up a music production company offering his musical skills to the ad industry with phenomenal success, penning and producing memorable ad campaigns including “This Goes With That At Sussan”, “D-D-D Decore” and his arrangement of “Still Call Australia Home” for Qantas.
The company grew to become Song Zu, a music and sound design mecca in Sydney and Singapore, that attracted some of the cream of Australasia’s composers and sound engineers. Song Zu won every conceivable advertising award domestically and internationally. Les also became chairman of AWARD, advertising’s most prestigious creative body.
In 2003 Les sold Song Zu to develop an exciting new direction in Audio Branding called Sound Thinking. As Australia’s leading audio branding consultancy Sound Thinking plays an integral and vital part in the communication and management of leading Australian brands through music and sound design.
It was also around this time that Les had the opportunity to pursue his other great passion, painting. Les’ portrait paintings have been exhibited at the Mosman Art Gallery as well as MU Gallery. He has been studying at Julian Ashton Art School and also managed to do a short course in Florence, Italy.
In 2008 Les was invited to join the board of Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy Australia (NORO) an inspirational, not-for-profit organisation providing Clinical Music Therapy and Community Music Programs. He is very proud of the work that NORO does in helping over 1300 patients a week through clinical music therapy.
Les’ other charitable work involves THE INTERCEPTORS, a band formed with his old friends from High School. THE INTERCEPTORS only play for charities and have proudly raised thousands of dollars for many worthy causes.
Coming full circle Les Gock and Rick Lum (HUSH) decided to reunite on stage again. The Get Rocked Show was created in 2019 with their great friend Mark Gable (Choirboys) on vocals and some of Australia’s finest rock musicians. The Get Rocked Show plays the music and tells the stories of the 5 wild years that HUSH were together. It brings back the glamour and glitz and the sounds that started the whole journey.
